GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names — latest release now available
GEBCO maintains and makes available a digital gazetteer of the names of features on the ocean floor. The GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) is responsible for the maintenance and update of the gazetteer data set.
The latest version of the gazetteer is now available to download in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and Adobe PDF form. This new release includes the 50 undersea feature names approved at the last SCUFN meeting, held in September 2010.
The gazetteer currently has over 3,500 entries and includes information on the name, generic feature type and geographic location of features on the ocean floor. For some features, the 'history' behind their name is also included. For example, Vancouver Knolls in the North Pacific Ocean, named after George Vancouver, an 18th century explorer of the Pacific coast of North America.
