The GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) works to maintain and update a gazetteer of names of features on the seafloor.
GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names — latest release now available
GEBCO maintains and makes available a digital gazetteer of the names of features on the ocean floor. The GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) is responsible for the maintenance and update of the gazetteer data set.
The latest version of the gazetteer, from August 2011, is now available to download in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and Adobe PDF form.
The gazetteer currently has over 3,500 entries and includes information on the name, generic feature type and geographic location of features on the ocean floor. For some features, the 'history' behind their name is also included. For example, Carpathia Knoll in the North Atlantic Ocean is named after the Cunard ship RMS Carpathia, which rescued survivors of the RMS Titanic disaster.
