Hemanaden (Ravi) Runghen, a scholar of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Programme, has been awarded a best poster prize demonstrating the application of science, at the Challenger Society for Marine Science 2014 annual conference in Plymouth, UK.
Second Training Workshop of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Indian Ocean Bathymetric Compilation (IOBC) project
The IOBC project is working to assemble, collate, archive and publish all publically-available bathymetric data for the Indian Ocean region with the aim of producing a new bathymetric map and grid of the area (north of 60°S).
The project is being undertaken by a combination of GEBCO/Nippon Foundation Scholars and other GEBCO members, guided by an Editorial Board.
This Second Training Workshop was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 5 – 9 May 2014 and was hosted by Marine Science Technology SDN BHD with assistance from the National Hydrographic Center of the Royal Malaysian Navy. Attendees included some of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Programme scholars involved in the IOBC project.
The aim of the workshop was to introduce the methodologies and bathymetric grid generation techniques used by another regional bathymetric mapping project - the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO). This is enabling the IOBC group to benefit from the skills and experience of Jan Erik Arndt, the Editor of the IBCSO program, as he described the work flow of the IBCSO bathymetry compilation.
The workshop provided the opportunity for the IOBC group to receive training on all aspects of the IBCSO project; from data homogenisation and archiving; data formats; gridding algorithms and algorithms used to merge multi-resolution grids to produce a final product.
These skills can now be used to help with the IOBC grid generation work.
Meeting attendees included:
- Jan Erik Arndt: Editor of the IBCSO, Alfred Wegener Institute (Germany)
- Rochelle Wigley: IOBC Project Director and Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Year 4 alumni (South Africa)
- Mohammad Chowdhury: Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Year 8 alumni (Bangladesh)
- Norhizam Hassan: Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Year 8 alumni (Malaysia)
- Xinh Le Sy: Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Year 9 alumni (Vietnam)
