The Fifth Extraordinary International Hydrographic Conference (EIHC) was held in Monaco from 6 to 10 October 2014. One focus for this meeting was the topical issue of capacity building.

Nippon Foundation/GEBCO scholar wins prize for best poster
Hemanaden (Ravi) Runghen, a scholar of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Programme, has been awarded a best poster prize demonstrating the application of science, at the Challenger Society for Marine Science 2014 annual conference in Plymouth, UK.
The poster, titled 'Managing Geophysical Data in the South West Indian Ocean using GeoMapApp', is based on work that Ravi did during his laboratory visit to Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) at Columbia University, Palisades, USA. It also relates to a class project on the development of a new bathymetric model of the Indian Ocean region - part of the Indian Ocean Bathymetric Compilation Project.

The Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Programme is a twelve-month course leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Ocean Bathymetry (PCOB). It is held at the University of New Hampshire, USA and is helping to develop a new generation of seafloor mappers. The course is now in its 11th year. Funding for the programme is provided by the Nippon Foundation of Japan. As part of the course, students are required to carry out training/internships at scientific organisations from around the world, such as Ravi's work at LDEO.
Ravi is a graduate of year 10 of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Programme and is an Associate Research Scientist working for the Office of Ocean Matters and Development under the Prime Minister’s Office of the Republic of Mauritius.
