The GEBCO-Nippon Foundation Alumni Team has confirmed the successful completion of its first 24-hour sea-trials, in preparation for the final round of the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE.
GEBCO team enter Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE
A team of graduate fellows from The Nippon Foundation’s GEBCO Postgraduate Certificate in Ocean Bathymetry (PCOB) Training Programme, will be taking part in the $7million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE.
The GEBCO-NF team have entered this three year global competition aimed at challenging teams to advance breakthrough technologies for autonomous, fast and high-resolution ocean exploration.
The new competition is part of XPRIZE’s 10-year ocean initiative in a commitment to launch five multi-million dollar prizes by 2020 “to address critical ocean challenges and help make the oceans healthy, valued and understood”.

The PCOB training programme aims to train a new generation of scientists and hydrographers in ocean bathymetry. The course is held at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), USA and is now at the start of its 13th year. Funding for the programme is provided by the Nippon Foundation of Japan.
